Welcome to the Alberta Innovates Application Portal, powered by SmartSimple.

In this video, I'm going to cover how to register as a member of a For-Profit Company, so that you can start to apply for our grant funding.

To begin, you'll want to navigate to our portal at albertainnovates.smartsimple.ca

Once on this page, click the blue Register button in the bottom-left hand corner of the screen.

The first step in the registration process is to determine which registration form you'll need to fill out.

If you are an employee of a company that has less than 500 employees AND less than 50 million dollars in annual revenue, click the button for For-Profit Organization - SME. If you are an employee of a company with either more than 500 employees OR more than 50 million dollars in annual revenue, click the button for For-Profit Organization - Other. Both forms have the same registration questions; the reason for the two separate pages is to tag you with the correct information so that we can service you better, so please ensure you click the button that's most relevant to you.

On the registration form, the first field is a lookup for your organization. If I was affiliated with "Dummy Corporation" for example, I only need to start typing the word "dummy" for Dummy Corporation to pop up. At this point, I can simply select the option and continue on with my form.

Any company that has already been created in our system will show up in this field. If your company does not show up, you will need to use the expanded registration form that will also register your company. You can find this expanded form by clicking the link here.

On our registration forms, please fill out all of the information marked with stars, as these fields are mandatory.

For the Legal Name field, you'll need to input the name of the company exactly as stated on their incorporation and legal documents. For example, though my company is called "Dummy Corporation," it's registered with the Province as 123 Alberta Ltd.

The Trade Name field is not mandatory, but you can use it if your company has an officially registered Trade Name. In this example, though my company is known as Dummy Corporation, it's not a legally registered Trade Name, so we'll leave this field blank.

Below this are the fields for the company's address, and below this is the field for the company's Jurisdiction of Incorporation. If your company is registered in Alberta, please select "Alberta" from this list. If your company is registered Federally, please select "Other" from the drop-down list and write in Canada in the box that shows up below. You might be registered to do business in multiple jurisdictions, so please use your original jurisdiction here. As a reminder, to be eligible for most of our funding through Alberta Innovates, your company will either need to be incorporated in Alberta, or have extra-provincial registration with Alberta.

The box below is the Corporate Access Number or CAN. You receive this number when you incorporate in Alberta or when you receive your extra-provincial registration. Please note that this is NOT the same as your Business Number, which is given to you by the Federal Government. If you believe you are eligible for funding without having a Corporate Access Number, as may be the case for large enterprises and companies outside of Canada, you can just put all zeros in this space.

The next field is the Organization's Primary Business Sector. Please select the sector that is closest to your company's primary occupation.

Next, while not mandatory, please provide us with your company's website.

This completes the registration section for your company. Please note that I have completed this form as if 123 Alberta Ltd. was NOT already in our system; please do not use this form to register with a company already registered as this creates unnecessary duplication.

The section below is the registration information for yourself. Note that this section below is the same on this form (where you register your company) as the form we showed previously where you simply selected your company from the lookup field. Please note: the information below should be your professional information, rather than your personal info.

For the Work Email field, please enter the email associated with your company if you have one. This is the email address you'll use to login to our website and receive email correspondence. For the Work Phone field, please enter your phone number with the area code. If you do not have a work phone, a personal phone is acceptable here.

The final field is in relation to communications and promotions. Please note: opting out of communications here does not opt you out of the automatic emails sent by our system or the correspondence between our Grants Team and yourself, as these are necessary to assist you during our granting process.

When you're finished the form, click the blue "Submit" button at the bottom of the page. If there are any missing fields or errors on your form, the messages will appear at the top of the screen. You may need to scroll up to the top of the screen to see the message if nothing happens when you try to click the submit button.

Once all of the errors have been resolved, please click the submit button again. You'll know that registration has been completed successfully if you see this confirmation screen. If you were not directed to this screen your registration was NOT successful; please check your internet settings and try again. At this point, the system will automatically send you an email to set up your password, and once that is complete, you will be able to log into our system and begin applying for grants.
